Top 5 Tips for Choosing A Front Door Colour.

The front door is 'the face the house' and first impressions matter when it comes to how visitors perceive your home.

Recently I was asked to propose colour palette options for the front door of a 17th centuary townhouse renovation.

Five key things to consider when choosing a front door colour.

1.

Consider Your Surroundings

Look to the natural surroundings of the property for inspiration. Tones that appear together in the building materials and in nature will also work well as paint colours.

2.

Dont Simply Match to a Photo

If you find a key image of a door colour that you like and you simply match the colour in a photo to a paint swatch colour, your result will be a noticeably lighter and brighter door colour. When you find a colour that you like, make sure to pick a shade that is a tone or two darker and more muted than the shade you have found.

3.

Choose the Right Paint for Exterior Use

The glossier you decide to paint the door, the darker the colour you should choose, as gloss colours also make the colour look lighter.

4.

Work with Natures Elements

Over time paint colours fade from the exposure to natural elements such as rain, sunshine and wind. In natural lighting exterior colours look lighter. Dont pick the colour indoors, go outside to the door and choose the colour in natural light, alongside the wall colour and any other building materials.

5.

Create With Colour

If you’re feeling adventurous go for bright colours for your front door but choose a shade that complements the rest of the property. If you’re not feeling brave, monochrome tones are always a safe and classic bet, or opt for darker colour shades to make a design statement.

Top tip: When you find a colour that you like, make sure to pick a shade that is a tone or two darker and more muted than the shade you have found in a key image.

Remember to check if the property is in a heritage area. If so, you may have to adhere to a particular heritage colour palette.
