The earth element can be brought into the home and garden in the form of beautiful ceramic pieces.
Of the five natural elements: air, fire, water, earth and ether; earth is the element of stability, groundedness and stillness.
The process of making ceramics brings earth and fire together. The major types of pottery are described as earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Ceramic work is typically fired twice: bisque fired and then glaze fired.
We love to use terracotta as it can be used for a multitude of uses around the home & garden.
Terra-cotta, (Italian: “baked earth”)
Terracotta is one of the most distinct types of clay you’ll find, given its rich, rust red/orange colouring. The reason for this distinct colour is that the iron content in terracotta’s clay body reacts with oxygen and gives it a hue that ranges through reds, oranges, yellows, and even pinks.
In The Home
As a Table Centrepiece:
Try mixing a variation of terracotta, glazed and non-glazed pots together with a mixture of green plants for a vintage look.
In the Garden
Large Terracotta Pot:
There are often large decorative clay and enamel-painted pots to be found at home improvement stores, markets, vintage and reclaimed stores and garden centres.
Terracottas porous nature allows for air and water to move through the walls, preventing soil disease and root rot.
Terracotta containers are great for Cacti, Succulents, and other plants that prefer drier soil.
