World Oceans Day

What can we do on World Oceans Day, to improve the health of our oceans?

Here in the South West we have some of the most beautiful and charismatic marine life anywhere in Europe, including stunning reefs, kelp beds and sea grasses, as well as the many fish, whales, dolphins and sea birds that live alongside them.

Oceans are immensely important and vital to humans. Producing vast amounts of fish and seafood, we sail it and bring cargo to and from places around the world. There's recreational boating too and we swim in it. Oceans are so important to us, that it is only fitting that a day... today... is World Ocean Day.

This special global day celebrates our oceans, and works towards maintaining and improving their health and cleanliness. As the health of our oceans goes, so goes the health of the entire planet.

The five oceans of the world:

Atlantic

Pacific - the largest

Indian

Antarctic

Arctic

For 2020 World Oceans Day is growing the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030. This critical need is called 30x30.

By safeguarding at least 30% of our ocean through a network of highly protected areas we can help ensure a healthy home for all!

What is happening in Devon to protect our seas?

Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) are a type of protected area at sea where human activity is restricted to protect marine wildlife and habitats:
